Dear ACTA Friend:

Have you settled on your New Year’s resolutions? Are you going on a diet, cleaning the basement, finishing that "to do" list? Well, we at ACTA have some additional ideas for you.

As we look ahead to 2011, we’ve got a range of resolutions for American higher education—and we hope that you will help us achieve them. Here goes!

  • Bringing a robust exchange of ideas in the classroom. Schooling should be for education, not indoctrination.
  • Ensuring graduates have the skills and knowledge they need in math, science, American history, and economics. Students can’t think critically, and succeed professionally, if they don’t have anything to think about.
  • Graduating students in four years. It shouldn’t take five, six, or more years to graduate from college.
  • Putting higher ed on a diet. No family should have to spend a quarter of its income to send a child to college!
  • Supporting governors and other education leaders who want to do more and better with less.

With these goals in mind, we are already hard at work in this new year.

Later this month, we will be issuing our sixth State Higher Ed Report Card on general education, intellectual diversity, governance and costs in Idaho.

We are staying focused on showing what students are expected to study and providing assistance to faculty and trustees who want to have a more coherent curriculum.

And we are reaching out aggressively to reform-minded governors around the country who appoint trustees and set an agenda for change. We hope you will stay involved with ACTA’s work and encourage you to:

  • Visit our website, our blog, and our Facebook page regularly to keep up with the latest here at ACTA.
  • Make a financial commitment today. These activities are simply not possible without your support!

These are exciting times for all of us in higher education reform. The economic downturn has a silver lining: Colleges and universities must do more and better with less—and ACTA is showing the way.

Together, we can achieve these ambitious New Year’s Resolutions.

With thanks to all of you and CHEERS TO THE NEW YEAR!

Best,

Anne D. Neal
President
