Universities should tighten their belts

Des Moines RegisterFor too long, across the country, higher-education costs have far outpaced the rate of inflation. The fact is declining endowments and state appropriations offer trustees an opportunity to take a close look at underlying priorities and fiscal allocations. At the University of Missouri, for example, the board of trustees recently identified $20 million in savings through the elimination of redundant programs, creative use of technology and administrative streamlining. If the Iowa regents focus on ways to reduce costs and avert further tuition increases, they would offer a national model for responsible stewardship. Americans are tightening their belts; higher education should, too.
