David Bruce Smith founded the Grateful AmericanTM Foundation in 2014, an organization committed to re-engaging Americans young and old in the drama and excitement of our nation’s history. To reinvigorate interest in our nation’s history, Mr. Smith uses radio and television programming, books, and events that focus on important moments of America’s story. He is also the president of David Bruce Smith Publications, LLC, a firm which is dedicated to writing, editing, and publishing children’s books devoted to American history.
Mr. Smith sponsors the annual Grateful AmericanTM Book Prize, an award for “excellence in writing, storytelling, and illustration of children’s historical non-fiction and fiction, focused on the events and personalities that have shaped the U.S. since the country’s founding.” The prize was created by Mr. Smith and the late Bruce Cole, former chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Mr. Smith received a Bachelor of Arts in American Literature from George Washington University and a Master of Arts in Journalism from New York University. He previously served on the board of trustees at George Washington University and continues to serve as a board member for President Lincoln’s Cottage, Smithsonian Libraries, Arena Stage, and the Washington Independent Review of Books. Mr. Smith is also President of the National Institute of Psychobiology (NIPI) in Jerusalem.
