Libraries Are Wasted on Columbia Students

And Trump needs to get politics out of the Library of Congress.
WALL STREET JOURNAL   |  May 22, 2025 by Joshua Katz and Solveig Gold

Founded in 1800 by John Adams, the Library of Congress bills itself as the largest in the world, with the British Library as its only rival. No others come close: the New York Public Library has fewer than a third as many items in its catalog.

As the Library of Congress’s website reads, ‘Whether you are a long-time researcher or are embarking on your first research project,’ you can consult its collections—no need for an elite institutional affiliation. The library provides a welcome alternative to the exclusive stacks of Butler Library. Under sensible leadership, it will preserve and advance the cultural legacy that Ivy League universities seem intent on undermining. For an administration that seeks to shake up the academic status quo, including by reforming the accreditation and federal grant-giving systems, the Library of Congress should be a top priority.
