Washington, DC—The American Council of Trustees and Alumni (ACTA) is proud to designate Assumption University’s Core Texts & Enduring Questions minor as a Hidden Gem. ACTA’s Hidden Gems initiative shines a light on honors programs, major degree programs, minor degree programs, and certificate programs that guide students through a high-quality and coherent education across the liberal arts, from philosophy and history to politics and the Great Books.
In Assumption’s Core Texts & Enduring Questions (CTEQ) minor, students nurture their love for books while developing credentials for their career. They study under faculty in four fields—art history, philosophy, political science, and theology—who facilitate dialogue with timeless authors and ideas. The program also features scholarship opportunities.
Daniel P. Maher, professor of philosophy and director of the CTEQ program, commented, “CTEQ courses in Theology, Philosophy, Political Science, and Art History introduce students to the great works of the tradition with the goal of facing the fundamental questions of human life. CTEQ stands in the Catholic intellectual tradition both by endorsing the cultivation of human reason and by directly raising the question of revelation and the limits of reason.”
ACTA’s Academic Affairs Fellow Veronica Bryant remarked, “Through thoughtfully designed curricula in the liberal arts, Hidden Gems foster deep learning in close-knit communities. Assumption’s Core Texts & Enduring Questions minor is an excellent program. Faculty carefully pair ancient and modern authors to provide a well-rounded education. We are delighted to include this newest Hidden Gem in our roster.”
ACTA’s Hidden Gems initiative complements our What Will They Learn?® (WWTL) project, which rates the core curriculum requirements at over 1,100 schools. These initiatives help prospective students locate universities and programs that will prepare them for successful careers, informed citizenship, and human flourishing.
