Former ACTA Board Member Edwin Meese Receives Presidential Medal of Freedom

October 11, 2019

On Wednesday, October 9, at a White House ceremony, the Honorable Edwin Meese III received the Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor. President Donald Trump praised the former Attorney General for his decades of extraordinary public service.

Attorney General Meese’s storied career included a pivotal role in Ronald Reagan’s campaign for the White House, as chief policy advisor to the President, and was appointed as the 75th U.S. Attorney General. After his time in office, he became a driving force for the Heritage Foundation’s key initiatives to protect and maintain the rule of law and to foster understanding of the core values of our nation.

Attorney General Meese joined ACTA’s Board of Directors in 2007, was unanimously reappointed in 2013, and finished his term in 2019. While serving on the board, he helped ACTA grow in profile and impact, and his guidance helped the organization refine its initiatives to have maximum effect in raising academic standards and in fostering accountability in college governance.

Attorney General Meese has been a steady champion of higher education, productive think tank research, and the understanding of political systems. He served two terms on George Mason University’s Board of Visitors from 1996 to 2004, during which time he oversaw the strengthening of the University’s core curriculum. He is currently on the Board of Directors of the Mercatus Center at George Mason University and holds the Ronald Reagan Distinguished Fellow Emeritus at The Heritage Foundation.

ACTA President Michael Poliakoff noted: “Attorney General Meese brought to our Board of Directors broad wisdom, practical understanding of university dynamics, and unflagging resolve to ensure that American higher education always lives up to its obligation to prepare graduates for engaged and informed citizenship.”
