American higher education is failing its most basic civic mission. According to a 2016 landmark ACTA study, nearly 10% of college graduates believed TV personality Judge Judy sits on the U.S. Supreme Court, a statistic made worse by the fact that less than one-fifth of universities require a single course in American history or government. To reverse this, state leaders are taking action. Tennessee led the way by establishing the Institute of American Civics at UT-Knoxville to restore foundational civic education. Now, states like Florida, North Carolina, and Ohio are following suit, building dedicated civics centers to ensure the next generation is prepared for informed self-governance.
