ACTA’s American Lyceum Initiative promotes the teaching and study of the unique history of the United States. In recent years, colleges and universities across the nation have established schools, institutes, and centers dedicated to teaching America’s founding principles, fostering civil discourse, and providing much-needed intellectual diversity. Collectively, these entities encompass the breadth of the Western tradition that shaped the United States.

Through rigorous academic programming, scholarly research, public events, and resources for K–12 educators, these centers are revitalizing the teaching of America’s story—its origins, evolution, and enduring debates. One distinguishing feature that sets them apart from traditional departments and programs is the director’s independent hiring authority, which enables these centers to pursue a free and robust exchange of ideas without fear of constraint.
