Nevada System of Higher Education Adopts Chicago Statement on Free Expression

March 12, 2019

The Nevada System of Higher Education recently became the 58th institution or system of higher education formally to adopt the Chicago Statement on Free Expression—a 2014 statement by the University of Chicago that continues to set a gold standard for institutional commitments to freedom of expression.

The Nevada System of Higher Education’s board of regents adopted a policy modeled on the Chicago Principles titled “Freedom of Expression: Aspirational Statement of Values.” In the statement, the board promises to promote the free exchange of ideas and to eschew censorship: “History shows that when institutions of higher education attempt to censor or punish the free expression of ideas, they undermine their core function of promoting rational discussion, inquiry, discovery, and the dissemination of knowledge.”

Nevada’s Board of Regents has made implementing strong accountability measures a regular practice. In 2015, it adopted ACTA’s 10 pivotal questions model as part of its campus review process. With the board’s latest commitment to free speech, ACTA is pleased to see that the Nevada System of Higher Education is continuing to foster core values of academic freedom, academic excellence, and accountability.
