In this episode of Radio Free Campus, co-hosts Steve McGuire and Justin Garrison discuss the tragic assassination of Charlie Kirk and what his murder might mean for the future of free expression in higher education. They interview ACTA President and CEO Michael Poliakoff about the perils we face and how we can all help de-escalate the tensions roiling America.
Steve and Justin introduce ACTA’s new Virginia Report Card, a systematic analysis of policies and survey data on the free speech and intellectual diversity climates at George Mason University, James Madison University, the University of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Virginia Tech. You don’t want to miss these results! They also preview ACTA’s upcoming 30th anniversary celebration and announce their latest “Hero of the People” and “Apparatchik of the Month” awards.

The American Council of Trustees and Alumni (ACTA) is pleased to announce that Lawrence H. Summers, the Charles W. Eliot University Professor and president emeritus at Harvard University, is the winner of the 2025 Philip Merrill Award for Outstanding Contributions to Liberal Arts Education.
What happened to Charlie is part of a rise in political violence in our country that transcends higher education. But we must recognize that rising intolerance and willingness to endorse violence as a response to speech on our campuses is part of the alarming trend. America’s institutions of higher education must be part of the solution, not part of the problem.
Launched in 1995, we are the only organization that works with alumni, donors, trustees, and education leaders across the United States to support liberal arts education, uphold high academic standards, safeguard the free exchange of ideas on campus, and ensure that the next generation receives an intellectually rich, high-quality college education at an affordable price.
