ACTA Statement on Stevens Institute of Technology Settlement

Governing boards must get their house in order

January 19, 2010

WASHINGTON, DC—Following the announcement of a settlement in the litigation between the state of New Jersey and the Stevens Institute of Technology, Anne D. Neal, president of the American Council of Trustees and Alumni, made the following statement today:

High-profile cases involving financial improprieties in New Jersey and admissions scandals in Illinois should be a clarion call for higher education governing boards to get their house in order. Trustees are rightly finding themselves on the hot seat for failing to hold themselves and their institutions to the same level of accountability that we demand from other institutions of comparable size and importance.

The American Council of Trustees and Alumni is an independent non-profit dedicated to academic freedom, academic quality and accountability. Since its founding in 1995, ACTA has counseled boards, educated the public and published reports about such issues as good governance, historical literacy, core curricula, the free exchange of ideas and accreditation in higher education.
