USAO gets an ‘A’ for academic core quality

The University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma in Chickasha is one of 23 institutions out of 1,100 four-year public and private institutions studied nationally by the American Council of Trustees and Alumni to receive an “A” rating for the quality of the required academic core.

The 10th edition of the ACTA’s What Will They Learn? survey reviewed the core curricula of schools — including 17 universities in Oklahoma — to determine the rigor of the general education program. Ratings are based on how many of seven core subjects are included in the curriculum: composition, literature, foreign language, U.S. government or history, economics, mathematics and natural science.

Oral Roberts University earned a “C” and the University of Tulsa received a “D” grade. The other 14 Oklahoma universities surveyed received a “B” for requiring four or five core subjects.

The study shows 100 percent of Oklahoma’s institutions require composition and natural science, but only the University of Oklahoma requires the study of a foreign language at the intermediate level.
