Trustees face complex choices related to costs and efficiency as they navigate new accountability policies, financial headwinds, and a changing global marketplace for college education. The latest release in a series of trustee guides from ACTA’s Institute for Effective Governance, Bold Leadership, Real Reform 2.0: Improving Efficiency, Cutting Costs, and Expanding College Opportunity identifies innovative approaches college and university trustees can adopt to contain costs and improve institutional performance. In this volume, trustees will find a playbook and blueprints for reform, as well as examples of how boards have encouraged the adoption of innovative practices including online consortia, curricular consolidation, and institutional analytics.

INTRODUCTION: A growing number of Americans recognize that our higher education system is in a deepening crisis. Leaders of one third of the country’s colleges and universities say that “American higher education is headed in the wrong direction.”1 Costs continue to rise, total college debt has ballooned, and the number of university administrators continues to increase.2 Meanwhile, skepticism about the value of a college degree grows. The number of hours students spend studying continues to fall, and schools’ commitment to intellectual diversity and to academic rigor wavers.3 It is no wonder that 89% of the public believes that colleges and universities must change if they are to serve the needs of today’s students.4  Continue Reading >>
