Austin Salon with Wallace Hall

May 23, 2019

On Wednesday, June 12, the American Council of Trustees and Alumni (ACTA) and the Texas Public Policy Foundation will host a luncheon and discussion at the Foundation’s headquarters (901 Congress Avenue, Austin, TX), starting at noon.

We will be discussing the role that university leadership—trustees and administrators—must take in addressing the threat to freedom of expression on the American college campus. The ideals of academic freedom and free speech are at the core of the American academic tradition. Teachers must be free to teach, students must be free to learn, and freedom in research is essential to the advancement of truth. This is not a time for complacency in college governance.

Mr. Wallace Hall will be our special guest and featured speaker at lunch. He has heroically fought to bring integrity and honesty to higher education. As Texans will remember, well before the current admissions scandal that has captured the public’s attention, Mr. Hall, then a University of Texas (UT) Regent, publicly raised concerns about the undue influence of political favoritism on the admissions process.

Fittingly, the UT student government passed a resolution calling for an official apology to Mr. Hall for the polemical opposition he encountered to his insistence on honesty at the University. As campuses increasingly witness the disgrace of disinvitations, shout-downs, and the retreat from intellectual diversity, Mr. Hall’s experience and guidance are urgently needed.

We will have much to discuss among friends, with good food, drink, and fellowship.

If you can join us, please RSVP by May 31 at ldeshaies@GoACTA.org or 202-467-6787. We hope to see you in Austin!
